Tax Returns Durban - accountants and bookkeepers working in a Durban accounting office

Tax Returns Durban covers the preparation and submission of every SARS return type: ITR12 for individuals, ITR14 for companies, ITR12T for trusts and IRP6 provisional returns. One request, quotes from registered practitioners.

Late returns are the expensive part. Administrative penalties run monthly per outstanding return whether or not any tax is owed.

Which returns you need, for which years, and whether anything is already outstanding.

For the 2026 year of assessment, SARS issued auto-assessments between 1 and 12 July 2026 and opened manual filing on 13 July 2026.

What You Need To Hand Over

  • Individuals. IRP5s, medical scheme certificate, retirement annuity certificate, IT3(b) and IT3(c) investment certificates, travel logbook, rental income and expenses, and any section 18A donation receipts.
  • Companies. Signed annual financial statements, the trial balance, tax computations, fixed asset register and prior year assessment.
  • Trusts. Financial statements, the trust deed, resolutions on distributions and beneficiary details.
  • Everyone. The prior year assessment, so the practitioner can check assessed losses and balances carried forward.

Auto-Assessments

SARS auto-assesses many salaried taxpayers using employer, bank, medical scheme and retirement fund data. If it is right, you do nothing. If it is not, you must correct and submit the return by the normal deadline.

  • Check the IRP5 figures. Employer errors flow straight into the assessment.
  • Check medical and retirement contributions. Third-party data is often incomplete where you changed provider mid-year.
  • Add what SARS cannot see. Rental income, freelance income, travel claims and home office claims are never in an auto-assessment.
  • Do not accept a refund you are not entitled to. It will be reversed with interest.

Accepting a wrong auto-assessment does not settle the matter. SARS can still raise an additional assessment later, and the understatement is yours. For the wider compliance picture, see Accountants Durban.

Frequently Asked Questions

When is the deadline for individual tax returns?

For the 2026 year of assessment, non-provisional individuals must file by 23 October 2026. Provisional taxpayers and trusts have until 22 January 2027. Dates are published in the Government Gazette each year.

How much does a tax return cost in Durban?

A salaried ITR12 typically costs R450 to R950 excluding VAT. Adding rental income takes it to R1,200 to R2,800. A small company ITR14 usually runs R2,500 to R5,500.

What happens if I file late?

SARS charges administrative penalties from R250 to R16,000 per month per outstanding return, for up to 35 months, plus interest on any unpaid tax. Filing stops the penalty from growing.

Do I have to file if I only earn a salary?

Not always. SARS publishes thresholds each year, and many salaried taxpayers below the threshold with a single employer and no other income are not required to file. If you were auto-assessed, check it rather than ignoring it.

How long must I keep supporting documents?

Five years from the date the return was submitted. SARS can request them during a verification, and claims without supporting documents are usually disallowed.
